What is alternative music? Alternative music is notoriously tricky to describe. It is not rock music, it is not pop, it is...alternative. The genre also has an endless numbers of subgenres, from hardcore alternative to garage alternative. While the genre is seemingly impossible to nail down to one category, alternative remains one of the most widely loved branches of music out there. While we are on the subject of alternative music, one artist has managed to catch the attention of many. From Ethiopia, we have Dettune. His latest album called "UNCANNY" will make sure to amaze you. Dettune is a 19 year old Ethiopian Alternative rock/pop punk singer and songwriter. He started music when he was 10 in 4th grade performing a school music contest and he was inclined to public speaking, presentations and stage acts. He is known for his powerful vocals and memorable melodies, as well as his unconventional style. His influences include Marilyn Manson, My Chemical Romance, and The Weeknd. Dettune is also a charismatic performer and makes interesting and thought-provoking music videos.

In his own words, “Uncanny” is “taking a selfie at the apocalypse.” He has made it clear in the trailer of his album that this album will be different; he is “scorching the earth” of expectations that all fell upon him when he started making music. Though “Kids on Halloween” was lovable and a notable song, he burns the album on screen. This leaves his audience wondering what’s next. But it is clear that Dettune created “Uncanny” without any societal constraints. Some of the highly notable tracks of the album are briefly explained below.
“Turncoat” is a jagged song with screaming, growling, and raw guitar. It is very emotional with grotesque lyrics about betrayal. It is reminiscent of Marilyn Manson.
In contrast “Loves Your Bestfriend” has a gentle, somber sound with a mesmerizing arrangement. This goes to show the range of this album and Dettune’s musical ability.
“Cross Section” is an acoustic song with a memorable melody reminiscent of the 90’s. It abruptly transitions to heavy guitar, again displaying the dynamic changes of “Uncanny.”
